Still lovestruck, I soared out of the mortal village and made my way back to the vampire village. Too many thoughts circled around in my head like tadpoles. As the moonlight tried to reach my tangled fur, I pondered on what could be considered problematic for a vampire, giving up mortals' blood. For 2 years, I have slurped on the rich and tasty red blood drained from the necks of innocent mortals. Now, I'm in deep love with a mortal, which meant I couldn't kill her own kind, for that will anger and frighten her at the same time.

I then considered another path, hunting animals and feasting on their blood. However, even deer blood didn't kill my hunger completely, mortals' blood tasted like mangoes, strawberries, sugary sponge cakes, and ice cream. Giving up my favorite dish would be like murdering my best friends. My thoughts still swirled inside my head, this was so complicated. I refused to forget about the beautiful mortal girl in the bed, I didn't want to let go of the love. If I did, then that would be devastating as living without blood, I wouldn't be able to confess my heart.

Then a changing thought struck me: vampires don't die from not drinking mortals' blood; and I could sweeten up blood with sugar, honey, and fruits. My brain processed so much blood that I thought I was being hit by a falling tree. I finally decided to switch to animals' blood; if the mortal rejected me, I would switch back to mortals' blood.

In my bat body, I fluttered my wings and soared back to the cavern. Once I settled back into the darkness and landed on the grounds of the vampire village, I morphed back to my normal anthropomorphic hedgehog form. As I walked back to my house, I noticed that no vampiresses were eying me or anything. How strange, this has rarely happened in my whole entire life.

Back at the wooden house, Rouge prepared salad (with mandarin-orange-flavored rabbit blood as dressing) in the kitchen as Mother washed clothing outside. I just sat in the living room couch staring at the cobwebs spun everywhere.

"So, Shadow, did you catch any humans?" Rouge, out of my sight, called.

    "Ah, no."

"How? I thought you always returned with mortals' blood being digested in your stomach."

Dang, now I had to give away my honesty. I've always been honest in order to please my family, friends, and the older vampires. One time, I confessed that I chomped up all of the pork ribs while in form of a wolf. Since revealing that I fell for a mortal would be deadly, I decided to lie.

"Well, I visited every house in the mortals' village and they all had garlic powder sprayed everywhere, so I made my choice to hunt for animals and drink their blood," I nervously replied.

"Shadow, you really want to hunt for animals?!?!" Rouge was astonished.

    "Yes."

"Well, I got to go to tell Mother," she then stopped preparing salad and rushed out of the house. I patiently waited.

1 minute later, Rouge, along with Mother, returned inside and met with me. Mother asked, "So, you want to hunt animals instead of mortals?"

    I nodded.

"Ah, you have been trained to hunt mortals, however you now want to give such activity up. At least I can say that animal hunting is safer than mortal hunting, because mortals hunt animals too."

"Where am I going to be trained?"

"You'll have to go to school again, nevertheless, it's summertime so you'll start training in September."

That caught my breath. If I had to go to school the next night, I wouldn't be allowed to see the darling mortal cat again, for like 10 months. Worst, she could fall for another man and my heart would ache like a bird that got attacked by a hawk.

Rouge interrupted, "So, Shades, do you want salad?"

I nodded slightly, got up, and walked to the kitchen for a nice bite of greens, rabbit blood, and carrots.
